GPD Win – Windows 10 Handheld – Console Highlight
When it comes to handheld gaming consoles, it’s hard to think of niches that have yet to be covered. You have your clone devices capable of playing original cartridges (Revo K101, Retrobit RetroDuo), countless handhelds running on Android OS (GPD XD, JXD S7800b) and even custom built, Linux-running handhelds (Pandora/Pyra). How about a clamshell-design, Windows based handheld?
In this post I’ll be taking a look at the GPD WIN – a yet to be released 5.5inch Windows 10 ‘laptop’ with dedicated gaming controls.
GPD WIN Overview
The GPD WIN is designed to be somewhat of a gaming laptop that you can fit in your pocket. GPD are a Chinese company who have been creating Android-based handheld consoles using Rockchip ARM processors for a number of years now. This is their first Windows based device. You can have a look at some of their current devices over on Willgoo.
GPD started a campaign over on IndieGoGo to help fund the manufacturing of the WIN. With a month still remaining, the campaign has absolutely smashed its target of $100,000. At time of writing funding sits at $287,354 with 965 backers contributing.
The GPD WIN is expected to retail at $499 but if you back the campaign via IndieGoGo you can get it for $299. Devices are expected to be shipped around October 2016.
The device will be powered by an Intel Cherry Trail Atom X5-Z8500 or Z8550 processor. This should be enough power for some light PC gaming, but don’t expect this to run demanding modern games at a playable frame rate. In terms of gaming you’ll be looking at running indie games or the countless classic console emulators available on Windows. You’ll also have the option of playing games from your Steam catalogue etc. You’ll definitely not be short on options. If you wish to play games on a larger display, you can make use of the mini HDMI port and connect it up to your TV or monitor.
Besides the Atom processor, other components inside the device include 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, 1280 x 720 5.5inch capacitive touchscreen and 6000mAH removable battery. The battery should provide enough juice for 6-8 hours of gameplay, much more than what you’d be able to get out of many of the latest smartphones.

What can the GPD WIN play?
The WIN does not accept any hardmedia based games. You won’t be able to walk into a store and buy games for this.
As the GPD WIN is yet to be released (and developed for that matter), it’s difficult to say what its exact gaming abilities will be. Notebookcheck ran a number of benchmark tests on the Cherry Trail Atom processors. As expected, they struggled to run the majority of games tested. It’s certainly not going to be a replacement for you gaming PC/laptop.
Here’s how the chip performed on a selection of tested games:
Where the device should shine is playing classic games via emulation and playing less-demanding indie games. There’s a long list of video game emulators available for Windows devices.

As the GPD WIN has yet to be manufactured, there are no videos available of it. I will update this post as videos of the device become available.

Where to buy the GPD WIN
The GPD WIN is currently only available to back on IndieGoGo. Early backers will be able to get the device for $299, with that expecting to rise to $499 once launched.
