Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Description

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the latest instalment in Activision's hugely successful CoD franchise. Raven Software were responsible for the multiplayer portions of the game.

Set in the 2050s, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare allows you to take control of Jack Mitchell, US Marine and private military contractor, as he takes on a variety of enemies ranging from the Koreans, to anti-Western terrorist led by a crazed Chechen, to a shadowy private army hell-bent on taking over the world for their own ends.

In terms of the gameplay, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare offers little that it's predecessors didn't. What few new ideas it does bring to the table though really set this game apart from those that went before. The new tech – in particular the exoskeleton that your character is endowed with – make mobility a massive weapon in your arsenal, which in turn makes the already frantic run-and-gun elements of the CoD franchise even more frenetic. This even feeds into CoD's trademark set-pieces. Where the new tech really comes into its own – and the real selling point behind the franchise since the ground-breaking Modern Warfare – is in the multiplayer. You can use the new mobility to make yourself a much harder target in ways that mean your mobility is now as much of a weapon as the arsenal you kit yourself out with.

As you'd expect from such a well established franchise, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was generally well received by the gaming press, averaging scores in the 80-90% bracket, although it must be said that the user reviews on metacritic offered a very different picture, averaging 4.5-5.5/10 depending on the platform. As with previous entries in the series, the single player campaign wins praise, but is just too short, but multi-player is where the game really wins the plaudits – and the sales.
